DMPQ: Do you think untouchability is still rampant in India? (sociology)

Untouchability is prevalent in our society since ages. It is a product of the caste based society. Untouchability is prohibited and practicing untouchability is prohibited under article 18 of the constitution. Evenafter strong laws untouchability is still rampant.

Inter-caste marriage is still below 5% which indicates non mingling of dominant caste and Dalits. New form of untouchability has surfaced like gated community not allowing Dalits to own a house. Survey shows that Dalits students are treated biasedly in universities. People generally prefer a non- dalit doctor than dalit doctor. People still carry the pre conceived and prejudiced opinion against the Dalits professionals and generally preferred the non Dalits.

Apart from this new form of untouchability, the age old  remnants of the discrimination are still prevalent in rural India. Like non commensality, pollution and privileges, strict ban on inter-caste marriages.  Hence, untouchability is still prevalent in India and its elimination in complete form is still to be achieved.
