CEC pats Assam for high electoral gender ratio

Assam’s women voters are just inches away from equaling their male counterparts in the electoral roll, a feat that has earned a big pat from the chief election commission of India himself.

The fresh electoral roll published on Monday has 1,13,55,79 female voters which is 49.30% of the total electorate size of 2,29,92,505. In terms of the gender ratio, the state has 972 female voters per thousand male voters, which is way above the national gender ratio.

The state’s women folk also come out in large numbers to cast their votes. In 2016 assembly polls 84.81% of female voters cast their votes and outnumbered the turnout registered by the male voters. In 2019 Lok Sabha polls female voters registered 81.34% turn out, but just fell short of the 81.75% turnout by their male counterpart.

The state has so far seen 20 chief ministers and of them only one was a woman—Anowara Taimur for a brief stint from December 6, 1980 to June 30, 1981.

On the other hand, since 1937, there have been as many as three women deputy speakers in the legislative assembly but none have been adorned the Speaker’s post yet. The first woman deputy speaker was Bonily Khongmen (1946), followed by Renupoma Rajkhowa(1999) and Pranati Phukan (2006).
