ASSAM

  • Assam government lens on elephants’ right to safe passage

  • Instances of man-elephant conflict are common in Assam, and more so when the annual floods in the Brahmaputra basin endanger both humans and animals. The latest flashpoint involves a dyke – a fragile bulwark against the raging river, but which also offers an escape route to herds of elephants moving out of the flooded Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

  • It said frequent animal movement on the dyke was ‘endangering’ the lives of the personnel of the water resources department who have been deployed to monitor and protect the structure.

  • With 90 per cent of Kaziranga’s 430-square kilometre area under water, animals, including herds of elephants, are moving out of the park and crossing the busy NH-37 for the highlands of adjoining Karbi Anglong district. The dyke is in close proximity to Kaziranga’s Burapahar forest range, and elephants traditionally use it to cross over to Karbi Anglong.
