DMPQ- What do you understand by the concept of Modernisation and Westernisation.

Modernisation:

The term ‘Modernization’ is a broader and complex term. It is a process by which modern scientific knowledge is introduced in the society with the ultimate purpose of achieving a better and more satisfactory life in the broadest sense of the term accepted by the society concerned.

 

Modernization refers to an attempt on the part of the people particularly those who are custom-bound to adapt themselves to the present-time, conditions, needs, styles and ways in general. It indicates a change in people’s food habits, dress habits, speaking styles, tastes, choices, preferences, ideas, values, recreational activities and so on.

 

Westernisation:

westernization a term emerged in the Indian context, when India was a colony of the British empire. when India was going through a transitional phase ( from being a colony to independent state), there was occurrence of many events, which resulted in westernization. Westernization can be defined as a process of social change where societies convert to the customs and practices of Western civilization. As a concept it has a long pedigree and it is closely linked with colonialism, modernization, and lately globalization.
