55,000 Guwahati families to get piped water from year-end
State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced “pure drinking water” for 55,000 households of Guwahati by the year-end. His announcement came after his cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Kejriwal’s free water and electricity to people of Delhi were among the factors that shaped his third election victory.
Sonowal’s office said, “The chief minister after reviewing the water supply works in the city said the new water supply project will supply pure drinking water to 55,000 families in Guwahati by December and the first phase of supply will be started on March 15.”
The city has 2.9 lakh households (according to the 2011 census) and despite being situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra, just about 32% of the families have access to tap water from treated sources. The rest depend on wells, deep borewells and majority have to buy water.
